AFA Safety
Glycol Exposure Guidance

I'm extremely pleased that NWA has listened to the AFA Safety Committee's recommendation, and finally issued some meaningful guidance with respect to glycol exposure and follow up actions. This has been long overdue. Hopefully this will better educate our members as to the potentially harmful effects of de-icing fluid especially when presented in amounts greater than normal.

I do wish, however, that you had offered AFA the opportunity to review the information prior to disemination as we could have collaborated on a few areas where questions may still exist. For example, no mention is made regarding whether vomiting should be induced or if one's contaminated uniform should be professionallly cleaned and if so, at whose expense. Had we been afforded that opportunity to review the communication prior to sending it out to everyone, we could have perhaps addressed those and other items related to glycol. Additionally, we may have wanted to include possible symptoms such that one knows what to look for following such an exposure. (i.e. nausea, headaches, nose/throat irritation, dizziness, drowsiness, diarrhea, respiratory complications, impaired balance, etc.)

Your attached procedures are slated for delivery to the Flight Attendant group on March 20. In that it is still March 19, perhaps consideration could be given to addressing those outstanding issues/concerns regarding glycol exposure. This bulletin would also be an excellent opportunity to include the telephone number where one can call to quickly obtain MSDS information for any product used at Northwest Airlines since not everyone has quick access to a computer especially when exposed to chemicals on board the aircraft. It would also be invaluable to have this telephone number and related information on MSDS in our Flight Attendant Manual. We spell out procedures for Exposure to Bodily Fluids, howevever no mention is made of exposure to these other types of day-to-day chemicals--including halon in the event one of our fire extinguishers accidentally discharges (which has happened in the past).

Please keep the above points in mind with this and future communications in that we can certain work collaboratively in that fashion. It is our sincere hope and desire that our Delta counterparts will see the value in such collaboration as well. This is certainly a step in the right direction.

Thank you.
